How surcharging reduces your processing cost to near zero
When you implement a surcharging program, credit card customers see a line-item fee added at checkout — typically between 1.5% and 3% — that covers your processing cost. The customer pays the fee directly, and you keep your full sale amount. After accounting for the small program compliance cost (approximately 0.25% of remaining card volume), most businesses see their effective credit card processing cost drop by 80% to 95%.
Surcharging applies only to credit cards. Card network rules prohibit surcharging on debit cards — including both PIN debit and signature debit transactions. The state reference in the calculator defaults all states to allowed — verify your state's current rules with legal counsel before implementing.
